Mosman Match Report

May
15
2012

BOBs headed to Rawson Oval on Saturday to take on the Mosman Whalers for another tough day in the office. Each club had a point to prove finding themselves both at the tail end of the Club Championships.

Down on troops, 5th Grade were courageous in defeat going down 29 – 14. Try scorers went to Richardo Harris and Andrew “Ringo” Stevens. Captain Cam Harris and Steve Payne were best on field.

A similar score line was repeated in 4th Grade with a 27 – 5 loss with the only points coming from the naked chef Webby. No 4th Grade match report would be complete without saying that Slug had an awesome game as too did Marty Evans and Leeming. Thanks to House’s mates for filling in the gaps on the field and for Gorgeous George taking over manager duties whilst out with injury.

In the first five minutes, 3rd Grade really took charge crossing over first with Ryan Godfrey picking off the back of the scrum. Mosman hit back with three tries of their own before the break. The Frat House started the second half like they did the first opening with an early try thanks to a solo effort by Shannon “You’ve got a door you’ve got a gym” Hanley-Jones. There were other good periods and positive signs but unfortunately these were outweighed by a lot of ruck watching and inability to man up defensively. Final score 33 – 14 to Mosman. Chris Gray and Ryno were the best of the forwards while H Winterbottom made a difference at scrum half off the bench.

This time last year, Colties upset Mosman on their own turf and they were geared up to do the same this season. Barker again opened up the scoring before the game got locked into a scoreless affair well into the second half with strong defensive efforts shown from both sides. In the end, not even Bedwell’s personal cheer squad of girls could get the boys over the line with Mosman winning 14 – 5. Plussy again was strong at #10, Fagan and Macca were tireless in defence and the newly appointed colt hero Jack Roach played his best game of the season. To heighten his acclaim it should be noted that Roach played #10 in 4th Grade and prop in Colts – that versatility has not been seen since Hensley bunked down to eat an all-you-can-eat buffet combined with a degustation in the one sitting.

For 2nd Grade, the scoreboard did not reflect the 70 minutes displayed on field. In many cases it was the wrong option that was taken or a pushed pass that was made that prevented more points from being scored but believe me when I say you guys will find your rhythm soon. I know I won’t stand alone when I say Brushy was an absolute stand out playing to his potential in every facet and minute of the game. Peto and Cooper threw everything at Mosman in the centres and then late in the game Peto stepped up to #10 for the head clashed Beadle who claimed all he could see was Hawaiian shirts.

For the past four rounds, 1st Grade have been gallant in defeat and have deserved the win on a number of occasions. Unfortunately, history was to repeat itself against Mosman after falling to a side that was also desperate to keep their Kentwell Cup hopes alive. Credit to Mosman as their first two tries in the opening half were from turn overs and their ability to counter attack swiftly out wide. A well placed kick from TP and a good chase put pressure on their winger in the in goal with Robbo bagging the try which brought the halftime score to 19 – 5. The mounting injury toll certainly didn’t assist in the second half with Dream Weaver, Forbes and Robbo all exiting early. Robbo sustained the worst injury with a fractured ankle but it was good to see the witty banter from the Mosman sideline bring a smile to his face. Final score 38 – 5. Michael Jenkins and Appy were tenacious in everything they did and you could not ask for anything more from Nick Allan who had an absolute blinder. Congrats to the O Train for making is 1st Grade debut!

For BOBs, the wet weather weekend couldn’t arrive at a better time with the numbers lost to injury. The additional week will be invaluable in getting players back on the park and refocused for Campbelltown. To this point, we have under delivered what we set out to achieve both as a club and as individuals but this can all be turned around if the desire is there. It comes down to each player’s commitment and attitude. When we get these two things right in everything we do the rest will follow. It needs to be made clear that this is not a week off for the club but an opportunity to reset our compass and go again. Training will continue and I encourage all of you to put in the effort for both weeks.

Saturday 26/05/12 is our annual bus trip to Campbelltown and it never fails to disappoint. Planning for this road trip has already started so no excuses for not being onboard – more details are on Facebook so be sure to secure your seat!

Saturday 19/05/12 presents a great opportunity to get together as a club to support Peto and Eggy and their band Your Midnight Rumble as they play at Cabana Bar. There’s a good vibe about this gig so make sure you don’t miss out having some light refreshments whilst listening to the sweet sounds of Peto on guitar and Eggy on the analog synthesizer. Introducing Robbo on yazz flute and wood fish style guiro. All money raised will be in aid to shower and cloth AJ Koch. Be sure to head to the C Lounge for some A class beats!

Iggies Match Report

May
08
2012

The forth round and second home game of the season saw us host St Ignitions. 5th Grade opened the account with an individual try to Joseph Harvey who still uses the trademark maneuver of faking the ball in opponent’s faces before brushing them away. The missed drop goal from Noodle would come back to haunt them as Piggy’s got a try of their own and added the extras narrowing winning 7 – 5.

Coltish had one of their best training sessions on the Thursday leading up to game day but the same focus and energy could not be replicated against a well structured Piggy’s side. Going into the break, Iggy’s led 12 – 0 with the game still very much in the balance. Barker had their opportunities to score throughout the game but each time came up short or lost possession. Pluss created one of those opportunities when he made a break up the middle of the field, however, a chip kick fell into the wrong hands and Iggy’s were able to counter scoring in the corner. Keep training the house down consistently lads and the wins will follow.

4th Grade got themselves into a high scoring affair but sadly came up short 29 – 24. It was the big men on the park that lead the charge with tries going to Waerea Taylor, George Marino and Redders. Drew Slater was also very strong and thanks to all of the Colties who backed up in support.

3rd Grade were hoping to turn things around and get the red and blue into the winning circle and from the opening 20 minutes it looked like the frat house were here to play. Irrespective of the two tries by Iggy’s before the break, the belief was there to come out and return the favor and then some. First points came to the Club Captain when a mistake was made in the Iggy’s backline, which was toed through and planted under the sticks. 10 – 7 and came on. Another try was awarded to Iggy’s after a rolling maul from a lineout and a late intercept sealed the game for the boys from Riverview. Best on field were Michael Fagan, Jack Philp at fullback and the welcome return of 300 game specialist Chris Gray.

The memory of winning a close encounter last year at Ryde was in the back of the mind as 2nds looked keen to replicate this with an early try to James “Shalky” Phelan. The shot out of the gate was short lived unfortunately and 2nds lost their way with far too many penalties conceded and poor tackling. Cooper was awarded a late try but the damage had been done with Iggy’s mounting the points winning 47 – 10. Brushtov was solid in the forwards and Beatle was a standout particularly in defence.

Missing six starters, 1st Grade was desperate to turn their season around. A well executed back line move created an overlap for Banana Hands Sussmann to go over first. A poor kick from the Iggy’s fly half inside their 22 was smothered by the inform captain Mark Foster before crashing over left of the uprights. Iggy’s stayed in touch with two tries of their own leading at the half 14 – 10. No points were scored in the first 15 minutes of the second half before Iggy’s imploded losing two players (a second rower and winger) to yellow cards. Over this time, Barker made sure Iggy’s paid with Fozzy going over for his second breaking a number of tackles to find the line. More points probably should have come but little errors cost them at the line. With 10 minutes to go Barker lead 23 – 21 and with Iggy’s at full strength again they lead a late charge to take the lead and that’s the way it stayed winning 33 – 23. Very spirited game gentlemen and another close encounter in which the win could have gone either way. Tubs and Michael Jenkins were exceptionally strong in the forwards while Robbo and Fozzy were the best of the backs.

Honorable mentions go to Jono Reid, Guy Lancaster and Marty “Brock Lesnar” Donaldson for reaching the Centurion Club with 100 games and the stalwart Marcus Sedman for hitting the big 200 games! A less honorable mention goes to Arus Labutis for wearing certified European weightlifting shoes to game day, which included pockets for weightlifting chalk. Surely, this out of place footwear has taken over my tangelo track pants as the most outlandish sideline attire.

Each week, the club makes the point for all of us to get to training. For the most part this hasn’t been happening and the results speak for themselves. Every club in 1st division train across all grades and if we want to match them and start to turn these games around then we need to do the same. No one can make you do it – each team needs all of us to be there to prepare for these games otherwise the results are not going to change.

Mosman are sitting with us on club championship points and if we all stand up we can give them a good shake down on their home soil. Lets not waste this opportunity!

See you on the paddock!

Match Report v Colleagues

May
01
2012

The match report will be short and sweet this week after a very disappointing hit out against Colleagues on Saturday. The club went through a very similar experience last season in round 5 when we played St Patricks away. We were outdone on the scoreboard not due to the lack of effort from those represented but for the significant numbers who didn’t show up.

When we are at full strength and everyone puts their hand up we are a challenge for any club in this competition. There is no club in Division 1 that you can take lightly, least of all the benchmark in Colleagues but that is exactly what we did on Saturday and the results showed.

The coaching staff work very hard to get teams organised and prepared for Saturday but simply not turning up or pulling out late with a flimsy excuse is simply not acceptable. The flow on affect this had on the teams due to the number of absent players impacted heavily, some players having to back up for two or three games. The lower grades and colts had poor preparation for their games as there were not enough players. Colts started with 12 players before three players were taken from 4th Grade to fill the gaps and exchanged with three 3rd Grade players. This continued down the line which meant all teams on the day were not able to play at their full potential.

5th Grade, 2nd Grade and 1st grade should be commended. Very gutsy performances under the circumstances. 5th Grade were narrowly beaten by last year’s premiers 15 – 14. 1st Grade used their full bench with plenty of time on the clock with a host of players backing up including Tubs, Brushtov, Houndy, Nick Allan and Robbo. Whilst the final score indicates a convincing win, BOBs put on their best game of the year and against other teams they no doubt would have been on the other side of the ledger. Gents, your first 20 and last 20 minutes of the game were outstanding. Stand outs were Jordan Smith, Bevo, Michael Jenkins and Kochie.

This week we are back home against Iggys and it goes without saying that it is time we all step it up and be counted. Our commitment needs to be present at training and on game day. There is a massive opportunity for the club to put some wins on the board this week but for this to happen both numbers and attitude have to be represented. Time to turn the tide gentlemen. See you on the paddock.

Beecroft Match Report

Apr
25
2012

Due to heavy rainfalls leading up to the weekend, BOB’s proceeded on Saturday with a split round playing colts and the top three grades against Beecroft.

Surprisingly, both the condition of the pitch and the day’s forecast for our first home game of the season was very positive. Colts took flight at 11.45am after some good preparation and healthy numbers on board. From the opening whistle, the forwards made their intentions clear dominating the breakdown and being very physical defensively. Plussy continued his good start to the season by striking first over the try line before Pappa Roach retrieved a fortunate bounce off the goal posts to score right under the sticks.

Sadly, I was warming up the tackle busters for much of the second half so I can’t comment on how the boys went but I did see a runaway try from the grassy knoll only to be disallowed due to a late hit. This unfortunately cost colties their bonus point but a good win nevertheless winning 19 – 0. The unassuming Michael Fagan was again strong tackling everyone with a smile on his face and a strong game also from Scott English.

The Frat House continued the winning feeling by putting a bonus point victory together beating Beecroft 22 – 10. Spectators witnessed the majority of the ball played within the forwards by both sides which resulted in both props crossing over in Manly Bones and Guy Lancaster. Credit to the engine room – you guys were more intense and hungry for the ball and it showed throughout the game. Jonty “ Jerry Curls” Donde had a superb game running riot and also crossing the line from a penalty, Worm and Cheese were effective in the halves and Michael Jenkins was a standout on either side of the ruck. Special mention to Webby who was involved in an altercation late in the game and was told by his opposite number to stop pulling his hair.

2nds were next to secure their first win of the season and they started the game in good form with some flash dance moves from Carl “Scrubs” Robertson setting up Flanman over the chalk. The Pear will let you know that he still had a couple to beat but sidestepping over the try line doesn’t count. Robbo crossed for his own five pointer but sadly that’s when the scoring dried up. Beecroft proved too strong pulling away with a 22 – 12 win. Largely speaking the loss can be put down to poor discipline with 2nds conceding far too many penalties including two yellow cards to Ryno and Dicko. Cut out the one-sided penalty count lads and I am confident this will contribute to getting us back into the winning circle.

When you compare the two games against Beecroft last season you would not be alone if you were experiencing some déjà vu after watching 1st Grade on Saturday. Both teams were very competitive on and off the ball which is always expected when these two sides come to head. Beecroft found the first jink in the armour crossing first but Barker replied quickly with a one phase attack through the backs and TP finding the end zone. No separation could be made at half time with two penalty goals awarded to each side making it 11 – 11.

New 1st Grade Co-coach Iain Beverley got the boys on track at the break but it was Beecroft that started the second half stronger collecting a try and a penalty goal for their efforts. The momentum swung to Barker in the final 15 minutes with a penalty goal awarded in front followed by a try of their own to the Cement Shoe locking up the scoreboard at 19 – 19. Interestingly enough, TP and Shoey were the same try scorers from last week – come on guys, time to share the white line with everyone! In the dying seconds of the game the Beecroft #10 took advantage of some open space and slotted a field goal right in front snatching the win 22 – 19. With a game riddled with questionable calls and the most interesting interpretation of the rules, it was a hard loss to take but this should only galvanise the boys even closer for the season ahead. Strong performances from AJ Gribble, Fozzy in the centres and the ever-reliable Spaniard, Kochie. Appy and Piri Weepu put on tough displays pushing themselves to breaking point.

We’ve got a huge week coming up against Colleagues at Woollahra. We played these guys a little over a month ago in a trial but as we all know trials mean nothing. Colleagues are the form club and each team needs to be well prepared to take these guys head on. For colties and 3rd Grade lets back up the wins from last week and for the upper grades its time to make our mark in round 3!

A reminder that the Club Captain Lock In will follow the Colleagues game at Cabana Bar – always a top night as we distinguish the men from the boys!

Knox Match Report

Apr
17
2012

The match reports are back for another season to summarise each team’s performance and make jovial comments about players with little to no supporting evidence.

You know the rugby season has commenced when;

- Beadle and Peteo’s spring time cabana wear are on display from the sidelines

- Patsy is shouting “ROOSTER” at the top of his baritone voice

- A sideline is used like a change room by the shameless Poppins

- Dougie Alcock is bringing down butcher bags full of quality South African biltong

- Tom Beverley’s senses are hyper excited about everything that Saturday brings

Round 1 had us start where we left off last season against Knox at Barra Brui Oval. 5th Grade were the curtain raises against 2011 Grand Finalists – a relatively unchanged and much younger side. It was a close contest for most of the game with youth getting the better of them in the dying stages and 25 – 0 final score. Cam Harris take a bow for rallying the college of yesteryear and putting a strong side on the park. Great to see the likes of Dave Gray, Ringo, Joe Harvey, Oggy and Noodle in the red and blue once more. If this can be replicated in weeks to come you guys will certainly find yourselves on the other side of the ledger. Can we get Sam Backo to play from Hornsby?

4th Grade were the only side on the day to visit victory lane with a good hard fought win 10 – 7. Great to see some size up front thanks to the connections of the House Keays. Great games from cult hero Slug and Clint “Hot Rod” Harwood who helped pave the way with strong performances also from Labutis and Rigby who refuses to hang up the boots until he gets to use his three peat truckers hat.

The Frat House had the dominant party with more keggers and quality togas yet struggled to get the results on the scoreboard. 3rd Grade overwhelmed Knox in the first 30 playing most of the field position in their half, however, only one try was awarded. Barker knew Knox would come at them after the break. A mistake from a kick resulted in their first try of three in quick succession. 3′s played well in parts but simply didn’t match Knox in the second half. A try on the bell to Matt Purdie Smith sadly came too late with the final result 19 – 10. Strong games from two of the big men in the engine room – Manly Bones and Ryno Godfrey as well as gallant efforts from the sub 30 flyhalf Mike Daly and Dale Mann.

In another close game with not a lot between the two sides, the Barker Colts look like a strong outfit with a mixture of new and old faces. Whilst the win was not achieved there is plenty to build on for the season. The forwards consistently set good platforms for the backs who were eating the metres out wide. Plussy steered the ship well whilst Slats, Northcott and Michael “Always Smiling” Fagan were very strong up front. Final score 20 – 7.

The narrow losses unfortunately continued for 2nd Grade who were locked in a tough encounter at 2pm. Credit to Knox’s defence as they kept us at bay for just the one five pointer but certainly not for the lack of trying. Score at full time was 16 – 7. Positive efforts from Herbie at flanker who is welcomed back from a serious injury in game one last year. Peteo and Shuey were creative and potent in attack and Shalky lead his team well all over the park even if he wasted a penalty opportunity by kicking it out on the bell. Too soon? Again, 2nds have the skills to pay the bills and when coached by the infamous Jared Rigby and the lesser known Geoffrey Bollom we should be a threat in the Burke Cup.

After back to back wins to the red and blue in 2011, Knox were out to settle the score at home. In the first 20 minutes, the momentum was definitely with the visitors striking first off some individual brilliance from Tom Pyle. Knox regrouped and finished the half very strongly sending waves of attack at Barker resulting in a couple of converted tries. Barker 8 Knox 17 at the break. Hensley and the lads were on the same page at halftime and knew that the momentum would swing back to them if they were hungry enough. Speaking of being hungry, I had a quiet word to Hensley after half time when I caught wind of him going on at some stage in the second half. I said to Nick “You must be jacked about going on – are you going to eat hearty when you’re out there?” Hensley’s reply was “I’m going to rip into them like open club sandwiches!”

The last 15 minutes was similar to the way we started the game – dominating the breakdown, making inroads over the advantage line and keeping possession for wave after wave but Knox were able to hang on 24 – 18 with the conversions being the difference in the end. Standouts were Steve Sax who was the enforcer all over the park, Fozzy who has given is unwanted pounds to the Club Captain was very effective in the back line defensively and in attack and the ever resilient AJ Koch who may or may not have bathed pre-game………or post game. Congrats to Stuart Blake, Appy, Jordan Smith and Gribs for their 1st Grade debuts!

Gents, all games were in the balance and very close on the scoreboard. Whilst the wins didn’t fall our way on Saturday we have a massive opportunity to turn this around against Beecroft for our first home game. Get to training this week, refocus and prepare well for this encounter – we have the ability to get the job done but our attitude has to be on the same page.

On a side note, great night at Cabana Bar for the season launch! Little concerning how many players are wearing pink slash watermelon shirts these days but what ever gets you over the line right?

Welcome to Season 2012

Jan
25
2012

The 2011 season was a huge challenge for BOB’s to step up to the plate and compete at the highest level of NSW Suburban Rugby. By season close, it was evident to players and spectators that we not only belong in 1st Division but on our day we can compete with any club and any side.

Welcome to 2012 – no doubt you have consumed your body weight in food and equal to the part with the flagon – well played. If that turkey leg isn’t fitting into the fridge by now its time to give her away and switch your focus to another epic season of rugby both on and off the field.

A healthy assemblage of players came together before the close of last year to once again elect a committee that will strive for greatness for the red and blue. Jared “Cheesy” McMahon accepted his third term as President and will lead the club to new heights in 2012. Completing the well weighted isosceles is Marty “Brock Lesnar” Donaldson as the new Secretary and Nick “Let’s Eat” Hensley returning as Head Coach and 1st Grade Coach. Jonty “Hot Lips” Donde, Geoff “Beige” Bollom, Chuck Tyler, the man only known as Schalky and myself will also return along with fresh insight and aptitude in Paul “Dream” Weaver, Carl “Deuce and a Half” Robertson and Jason “Mad Monday MVP” Brushe.

For the first time in BOB’s history, the club will now be training on Tuesday and Thursday nights to assist with both recovery and preparation between Saturdays. Pre-season training will start on Tuesday 31 January 2012 from 6.30pm. The work that is put in over pre-season will pay dividends throughout the season so be sure to be there from the last day in January.

The rivalry continues to grow and it seems NSW Suburban Rugby knows it, as the first round will be against our old foe Knox Old Boys on Saturday 14 April 2012. Pre–season trials will take place leading up to the season opener but let’s make sure we are ready to dominate as we did in 2011. The club is very excited to prepare for another first which will be to play Knox Old Boys on Saturday 30 June 2012 at Barker #1. This will mark a huge day in rugby circles and a massive opportunity to pack out the ground creating a tough environment for the visiting team. Touch has already commenced and will continue on Sundays at Karuah Park (opposite the BOB Dome) from 4.00pm.

With a season of Division 1 under our belts, BOB’s will be wiser and smarter, and we will have a better idea of what it is going to take to bring back final births and silverware to the cabinet. The goals we set ourselves and our club can only be achieved with your commitment and that commitment needs to start now. Get yourself involved early whether that is getting down to training and/or introducing new players to the club. Playing to win is always our focus but this will only come with solid preparation and a healthy player base.

We have the ingredients to give this division a real shake down. I promise you that if we work hard now and consistently for the season we will be there in September but there needs to be an all-in approach. Here’s to a prosperous and triumphant 2012 season – see you on the paddock!

Kind regards,

Guy Thomas

Match Report v KNOX

Aug
25
2011

If you blink you will miss it. I’m not talking about the food at a buffet when Nick Hensley is present. I’m talking about 2011 season that has been and gone. Unlike the past three years, the BOB’s season has finished three weeks earlier and has not been celebrated with a trophy and GF medallions. Nevertheless, the club and the players have achieved a lot of success over the 18 rounds and with a season in Division 1 under our belts we should aim to be more consistent and potent for 2012.

The final match report for 2011 and you could not write a better script than coming up against Knox Old Boys at Knox #1. With nothing but rain and wind forecast, the Rugby Gods were on our side with quite the opposite for the big occasion. With a slight change to the schedule, 4th Grade kicked off the day but started the game a bit flustered letting in two soft tries and not executing their attack to the best of their ability – even though Buckets Thomas was in at #10. The last 10 minutes of the first half, we started to find our rhythm commanding a good amount of possession and we knew going into the half that 12 points would be very achievable to reel in. The bait was taken early into the second half with a try going to fullback Matt James. Another try went against us shortly afterwards before the backline put together some quick hands finding an overlap out wide. Justin Mulkearns (former Knox graduate) raced two thirds of the field to score his first try for the club. It was 17 – 14 and game on but sadly the fairy tale finish was not to be. Strong performances from Big Luke Ingold who put a sock in their #10, Rocky and the Slug (which is a given). Thanks to Booker, Baz, Paulie and Andy for the cameos! Jack Skinner is now banned for reading any pre-game speeches – he was terrible.

3rd Grade were next on stage and thirsty to get us in the winning circle. A closer game you will not find with both teams giving the other everything with not a lot of reward. Nick Bannister was the sole try scorer and in the dying minutes the Frat House had the opportunity to level the game 10 – 10 with a penalty goal 30 metres out. With risk comes reward they decided to go for the win but similar to 4′s the fairy tale 5 pointer on the bell was not to be. Will Keays was again strong up front unlocking a lot of doors in the Knox defence, Chris Taylor worked far better in size 40 shorts providing excellent service and the first class Tom Norval ran riot as expected.

Colties put Knox to the sword in the first round 25 – 12 and were chomping at the bit to repeat this performance on Knox soil. As expected when playing the black and blue, the games would be close and the tries would have to be earned. Barker had a great start to the game scoring two tries by Figg Jam and Hugh Doran but Knox were certainly out to balance the ledger coming back with two tries in the second half and levelling the game 12 -12. The momentum shifted and even though Barker had their opportunities to score, Knox finished the stronger scoring a third try to win 19 -12. Solid efforts from Macca and Broger and Monkey controlled the ball very well with the forwards and backs. Well done to the colts for all staying around and supporting for 1′s and 2′s – your presence was felt on the field and I’m not just talking about the shirts off party performed by Mr Oog!

2nd Grade knew well before the game that they had a big task taking on a side who would make the top four if they came away with the win. We also knew that Knox 2nd Grade liked to have their team the same way they liked their pancakes – stacked. After a good preparation and some motivation words from the Big Apple we were primed to spoil the party. The opening 10 minutes was a seesaw affair with both teams testing each other out. Knox was the first to crack the line and was able to do so again giving them a handy lead. Whilst Barker didn’t have anything to show for their efforts on the scoreboard going into the half, the impetus was in our favour when Guy Lancaster was given the ball from a penalty. Big GL hit the line hard as he always does and their mouthy #6 attempted to rock the prop with a shoulder charge that turned ugly. GL bumped him to the floor before the very lost flanker staggered to his feet to search for some missing teeth. To add salt into the wound, the referee gave him a yellow card and he never returned having injured a broken jaw. You could have cut the tension with a knife between the two teams as they broke for half time. Knox proved how much they wanted to make finals by extending the lead in the second half but in case there was any doubt the 70 minutes showed the crowd that the rivalry has lost nothing over the years! Dominant games from T Bev, Pear Salad Flanagan and Ryan “Hopoate” Godfrey.

With the day going against us thus far, it placed even more emphasis on the 1st Grade encounter and to leave the ground as winners. Each team was not playing for a finals birth but a win would provide bragging rights on the ladder over the other team. In the first half, Barker started where they left off against Campbelltown the week before being tough at the breakdowns, offering solid defence and making the advantage line. The boys went into the break up on the scoreboard commanding most elements of the game. The second half would be where the tempo of the game lifted a few octaves. Barker started the second half in fine form with a series of kick-chases that went the distance of the field with Thomas “Peter Pan” Pyle scoring his 16th try of the season which equals the best for Division 1. Sussmann crossed for one out wide and could have easily made it two if he hadn’t spilt the pill which may have been due to the coconut oil he applied to his abs at half time. This gave the red and blue a commanding lead of 25 – 10 with about 20 minutes to go. The Barker crowd were optimistic the game was ours but beware of the rivalry! After being down the entire game, Knox fought back courageously to score two quick tries making it 25 – 22. The final moments of the game were in the balance but Barker were able to hang on much to the jubilation of the crowd minus the bagpiper! Another gutsy game and well done beating last year’s finalists in both games! In a game where the entire team stood out there were very strong games from Richie “Texas” Holden and Fozzy in the centres, Danny was a textbook #9 in his last game, the book ends lead from the front, and “Big Thing” Hebblewhite, Will Mac and Houndy were pests to the opposition.

Honourable mentions go to TP, Fozzy and Flanagan for playing in their 100th game on Saturday. Double the accolades goes to Rocky and Tim “Toolman” Gray for reaching their 200th. Congratulations to Chris Gray on an awesome career with BOB’s as he has officially hung up the boots after notching one last win against Knox. Special thanks to all our sponsors, supporters, physios, committee and coaching staff for all of your assistance and support throughout the season. Particular mention to Nick “Big Apple” Hensley who has been instrumental to the club as Head Coach – may your appetite grow larger for next year!

The Mad Monday weekend that followed was eventful and painful for what can be remembered! Thanks to the House Keays for the keys to the house. The club hit a whole new level with costumes and kangaroo court!

This wordsmith will go into hibernation over the summer but I hope you have enjoyed reading these match reports as much as I have enjoyed writing them.

In the words of Matt Giteau – Thank you ball boys. Thank you linesmen. That’s it.

Match Report v C’Town

Aug
15
2011

It may have had something to do with being jacked up on Mountain Dew, but there was certainly something in the air on Saturday for our last home game of the season against Campbelltown. For a club that supposedly doesn’t travel well, the Harlequins were there early and in numbers smashing all of our bacon and egg sandwiches before we had a chance to eat them – wars have been started for less!

Colties were outsized and overpowered in the first round but from the opening 10 minutes this time around it was a different story. Good line speed and in your face defence was paramount and the Baby BOB’s delivered in spades. The first try went to Jack Philp who was electric off the wing. Jack also played a hand in the second try fielding a clever kick from Hugh Doran who received the inbound pass and scored under the sticks to make it 14 – 0. BOB’s had control of most of the game, although the visitors did finish stronger crossing the line twice in the final 10 minutes but failing to miss both conversions. Great win Colts and nice to go out as winners on home soil. The Oog and Fagan put on the best performances in the forwards but congrats to all players as you muscled up well. Best dressed goes to the Coach Miguel Curlewis – some of the C’town boys thought you were a bum and I am not making this up.

4th Grade had one of the biggest challenges on the day taking on the undefeated Harlequins. From the match up in the first half you wouldn’t think there was a big difference on the ladder with Barker trailing 21 – 15. Jack Philp continued to set the field alight running in a hat trick of tries – one that took out the “Most obvious try that wasn’t a try” award in the corner right in front of the disgruntled visitors and one of the best individual tries that involved two chip kicks to himself before finding the line. Another try was awarded to Adrian Broger but C’town proved why they were undefeated putting on a number of tries in the second half winning 42 – 20. Despite the final score, this was a very gutsy performance lads. Rocky, Sluggo and Aras Labutis all had strong games and Charlie Tyler now believes he may not have enough points or games left to reel in the Slug.

After racking up the biggest score of the season last weekend, 3rd Grade were keen to continue this run against another ladder leading Campbelltown. The first half showed promising signs drawing early blood with tries going to Will Service (this is not a misprint) and Chris Hickey who did well to back up after coming off early for Colts. After commanding most of the game I’m sure the Frat House would love to have the last quarter of the game back. True to their position on the ladder the Harlequins fought back gallantly to take the game 33 – 19. Adrian Broger stepped up very well, House Keays laid solid foundations all game in attack and defence and Ben Reid had his best game of the season, nay, his career – well done Benny!

After the disappointing results over the last couple of weeks, 2nd’s were eager to turn it around this week and go out with the ‘W’ on home soil. With the added incentive of Beige willing to pay for our drinks on Silly Sunday if we win there was not much more motivation required. Similar to last week, we took charge with a good percentage of ball and field advantage. With a penalty awarded 10 metres out, Shalky was quick on his feet taking the quick tap and scampered over the line for the first of his three tries. C’town hit back quickly with a try in the corner and the game was in the balance at the half. Some wise words from Beige at half time as well as the reminder of free ales put us on the right path at half time. The execution in the second half was first rate with the forwards leading the way with dominant scrums and solid ruck/maul work. This set up some good ball movement in the backs with one try going to Peteo and two more tries to Shalky who may or may not have been seagulling on both wings. Well done to Benny Reid and Jules for assisting in the backs in the second half. C’town scored a late try on the bell to make the final result 29 – 25 but a good win nevertheless and let’s not forget the beers are on Beige this Sunday!

Both teams had a lot to play for in the 1st Grade match but for very different reasons. Campbelltown’s season was on the line and needed a win to stay in the hunt of the top four, whereas Barker wanted to build on their positive second half of the season, go out as winners for the last home game and payback for eating all of those bacon and egg sandwiches. Like many games before, Thomas “Where’s my contract?” Pyle scored first but failed to kick the conversion and C’town were able to answer back with an unconverted try of their own and a penalty goal. There were individual battles going on within the war with Andy Perry and Marty “Brock Lesnar” Donaldson locking heads up front and getting the better of the opposition. In fact, across the field, all players got very physical defensively – Danny was bringing down players twice his size, Dream Weaver, Fozzy & Richie were strong in the middle and Robbo brought his bump and grind moves from the D floor. The three tries that followed in the second half were nothing short of spectacular. The first to TP off a brilliant chip kick down the blind side from Danny, the second from a restart to Sam “Big Thing” Hebblewhite after great pressure from Andy Perry and Robbo and the third to Saxon under the uprights after a great inside ball from Richie. C’town kept up in the race when it came to tries but failed to make the conversions with BOB’s taking out one of the best wins of the season 24 – 23. Very courageous win lads – let’s take this appetite to win against Knox on Saturday!

Honourable mentions go to Todd Jeffrey, Michael Fagan, Jack Philp and Adrian Broger for playing in three games on Saturday – awesome effort lads! A dishonourable mention goes to “Big Apple” Hensley who left the field after 4th Grade unsatisfied as the sign clearly said “All You Can Eat” and to Servo’s rude pants which he bought from a female yoga teacher.

All in all, it was a very successful day for the club and a nice way to draw the curtains on the last round at home for 2011. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the devoted family and friends that support us every week! The players and the club appreciate your ongoing support and we look forward to seeing you all in 2012!

Gentlemen, it goes without saying but this is our biggest weekend of the season – Knox v Barker! Let’s carry the momentum from Saturday into the final round against our old rival. Knox will be geared up to host their Ladies Day at Knox #1 so we need to make sure we’re there to spoil the party. We were a mere 5 points short from sweeping Knox in all grades and colts in the first round and that same intensity needs to be delivered on Saturday. Get down to Turramurra on Monday and Wednesday for the last training sessions of the year to give each team the best opportunity to prepare. Finishing the season strongly against Knox should be every players priority before we enjoy the weekend’s escapades!

Match Report v Lindfield

Aug
09
2011

Since the halfway mark of the season, BOB’s have been looking forward to Saturday’s local derby against old rival Lindfield Rugby Club. With only three rounds to go, BOB’s wanted to ensure we cemented our spot in Division 1, which ultimately meant that Lindfield would be relegated.

The spectators of the Colts game would have aged about 20 years by the final whistle with a seesaw battle that resulted in very few points but not due to the lack of trying. Each team had countless opportunities throughout the game to break the deadlock of 7 – 7 and when the crowd was certain a try was imminent, we were denied by a last pass that went to ground or a player pushed over the sideline. The final throw of the dice by Barker was almost a certainty creating an overlap after a good break from the backs followed by some forward picks to suck in their numbers. It wasn’t to be and both teams came off the field feeling unsatisfied by the result. Strong games from the fastest guy in the club – Jack Philp, the best gamer in the club – Sam Mac and the biggest unit in the club – Scott Goodman.

The emotions continued to flow into the 4th Grade game when Rocky lead a well equipped side into battle. Each team traded two tries each with a betting man likely to go either way on the winner. Lindfield managed to score in the corner giving them the edge with only a few minutes remaining and this was enough to secure the win 17- 12. Tries went to Drew Slater and Shalky who was seagulling on the wing and solid efforts from Nick “Mattingly” Pluss, newcomer Toby Ellis and Nick Carhill.

Whilst cloud cover started to appear overhead there was no precipitation but it did rain points for the mighty Frat House. 3rd Grade reminded us all what we were here to do and that was to pile points on our opposition – 51 points to be accurate. The first hat trick of the season went to Clint ”Hotrod” Harwood who was carving Lindfield up like a Thanksgiving Day turkey. Two tries went to big Andy Perry who laughed at his opposition when busting up the middle and one try to the House Keays, Chris “Buckets” Taylor (who had to change shorts mid way through the game to a bigger size as it seems he has collected too much junk since his last game), Benny Reid, Scott Goodman and an unorthodox try to Manly “You’ve got a Door – You’ve got a Gym” Bones. Well played lads!

Similar to Colties, 2nd Grade had a very frustrating game displaying far from their best rugby. With a majority of the possession and field advantage throughout the game, 2nds failed to finish each wave of attack with points. We were the first to draw blood but it only came in the way of a penalty goal. Lindfield, to their credit kept testing us with the little ball they had and found the try line with 10 minutes to go. Again, we had our opportunities in the final term but couldn’t find any cohesion to find the line. A number of the forwards lead well from the front including Ryan “I could bench press Rael’s old man’s Harley Davidson” Godfrey, Jimmy Harris and big GL. Lads, remember this unsatisfactory feeling and use it as motivation to not repeat this on Saturday. Lets finish off the season with our last home game as winners.

1st Grade prepared well and credit to Coach Hensley the players had been shown to their table, they had a knife and fork ready and a napkin in their lap – it was time to eat! From the opening minutes you could tell Lindfield was on the menu and the boys were to eat hearty. Lindfield had their moments but BOB’s had control of the game for the majority of the 80 minutes. Swift ball movement and tight lines from the backs lead to a number of tries from Abs Sussmann, Richie Holden and Thomas “Love is a Drug” Pyle but the forwards proved that they are all about scoring pies as well with five pointers going to Graysie, Alexander J. Koch, Will Mac and the Junior Figg. 1st Grade ran away with the game 42 – 20 with honourable mentions also to the Dream Weaver and Danny Matthews who controlled the play and execution very well. Special shout out to AJ Gribble and Thomas Beverley for making their first 1st Grade appearances – well done gents!

Players and spectators, our final home game for the season of 2011 will be this Saturday against Campbelltown. Let’s finish the season at home on a high with a dominant performance in all games. Our last home game against St Pats was disappointing in respects to results and player support across the day so lets turn this around and finish on a positive note. Lets continue to build success so we can carry this into our final round against Knox Old Boys!

Match Report v St Pats

Aug
02
2011

The second last home game of the season had us hosting St Patricks under blue skies and a temperate 21’C. Whilst the senior players set up shop and enjoyed the culinary delights of the BBQ, Colties warmed up in good numbers with the intention to turn things around from the first round onslaught.

From the outset, there was a vibe from the sideline that these guys were ready to rip in. Aggression and hunger for the ball had both teams trading tries in the first half, one going to Alex McGill who is playing like he never went away and Chris Hickey who swiftly pounced onto a kick put through by Hugh Doran. The second half was closely contested with Barker applying a lot of pressure to St Pat’s line but were unlikely to find the points when they needed them. St Pats had their opportunities also and capitalised running away with the game in the final ten minutes winning 29 – 17. Many positives to take away from the game lads and you were certainly more competitive from the first round. Excellent efforts from Sam Mac, Alex McGill, Oogie and Hugh Doran.

4th Grade started in a blaze of glory scoring two early tries, one of which was off a Big Apple break up the middle followed by some unorthodox passing. St Pats woke up from their slumber and fired back with two tries of their own in quick succession and then it was Barker’s turn to fall asleep. Unfortunately, it wasn’t until half way through the second half before further points were to come but by then the damage had been done with the away team winning 54 – 22. Charlie Tyler had another solid game and if he continues these efforts he will compete with Sluggo for overall MVP. The new comer to the club, Jack Philp was a live wire with pure speed crossing for two tries and Nick Pluss also had a great game even though he hasn’t cut those side burns.

3rd Grade only just fielded a team in time for the kick off but put in a pretty gutsy effort considering the limited preparation and a host of players having to back up from the previous two games. Senior Slater was hunting down anything that moved and the Chef was cooking up some ham and eggs up front. Obama was the sole try scorer and much like a wombat burrowing into his hole, Cheese found his home over the try line.

2nd Grade were up against the second placed St Pats who were no doubt keen to retain their position on the ladder coming into the finals. Barker was hoping to go one better after a narrow loss that went down to the wire in the first round. An early try from a kick and chase from St Pats was a wake up call for the team to kick it up a gear responding with two solid tries from Geoff “Ivory” Bollom and Ryan “Tokyo Drift” Godfrey. The author of this well written piece educated on field both Drew Slater and Andy Perry in the ways of playing inside centre with both loose forwards very anxious to play in the backs. Unfortunately, the black and gold had much more hunger to win and the lack of troops really put us on the back foot. Physical game from Jimmy Harris after having his face pounded in 4th Grade from a guy who was wearing prison shorts, young Thomas Beverley was solid at 10 once again and Milo had one of his best games of the season.

After getting a pretty decent touch up in the first round, 1st Grade wanted to bring back the fire that brought down Drummoyne a few weeks ago. The game started in very similar circumstances from round 1 with Barker mounting the pressure on the visitors, eventually taking away a penalty goal. Captain Sam “Big Thing” Hebblewhite went down with another concussion which may have had something to do with how many sangrias he punished in Mexico the last two weeks. DDT stepped up for his third game of the day and clicked well finding the rebound giants Tubbs and AJ in the lineouts. Both centres, Richie and Buckets McGee Foster ran great lines almost always breaking over the advantage line and/or linking up with the wingers and TP. Points came for Barker but not at the same rate they were coming for St Pats with them jumping out to a good lead with 10 to go. True credit to 1′s – you dug deep and finished off the game on top with a late try – final score 33 – 24. Had there been some more time on the clock who knows? Inspirational game from Danny who can be heard all over the park and strong efforts from Will Mac and Foster.

Some honourable mentions go to a number of guys who dug deep and played multiple games on Saturday. To the Colts that backed up, particularly Marty Evans, Nick Pluss and Jack Philp, some of which played four games. Well done also to Andy Perry and DDT for playing in 1’s, 2’s and 3’s.

As much as these guys should be commended it makes it painfully obvious that the numbers represented at training and on game day is simply not good enough. Both outings against St Patricks have been poor and this reflects directly on the scoreboard. It was after the St Pats game in the first round that the club addressed this issue before unleashing on Lindfield. The same message needs to hit home before Lindfield this Saturday and for the final two weeks of the season. There is still a lot of work to be done, many games to win and championship points to secure before the summer hiadus so commit yourselves to your team and your club for the next three weeks and lets lift our efforts this Saturday at Soldiers Memorial Park.

Match Report v Beecroft

Jul
19
2011

Like a winter catalogue collection for Rodd and Gunn, BOB’s had their annual theme day – “Dress Like Your Old Man” which for one day only bridged the gap in fashion choice between the fathers and their sons. Some honorable mentions go to the mint safari suits worn by Brock Lesnar and Robbo, the very accurate comb over and cane combination from Beatle and the silver fox himself Judge Fozzy presiding. A dishonorable mention goes to Servo’s spring time cabana wear that was clearly the pajamas he picked up in Ecuador and Sam Figg for claiming to wear his old man’s threads which were clearly his own and trying to cover over it with the use of his pet Schnauzer.

After completing two weeks on the road, the club was glad to be back at home against a similarly placed Beecroft in the Club Championships. Colties took to the field and within no time it was clear to see that the muddy centre pitch was going to cause issues both in attack and defense. Colts welcomed back the return of Alex McGill who was awarded a try and hardy efforts from Michael Fagan, Sam Mac and Scott Goodman. Beecroft were never in the game at any stage and Barker should have opened the floodgates on the scoreboard but it was good to see them back in the victory lane winning 19 – 0.

A number of times this season, Barker have probably been the better team on the park but in the dying minutes of the game the opposition has clinched victory on the bell. 4th Grade experienced this on Saturday with a 12 – 12 score line with opportunities to take the lead only to have a run against play and Beecroft scoring in the corner with the final whistle to follow. Great individual tries and performances from Clint Harwood and Nick Cahill.

The Frat House bounced back from last week’s loss to grind out a win beating Beecroft 10 – 0. It was Harwood’s day backing up with another strong game setting up a try for Jono Reid and crossing over for one himself. Guy Lancaster led strongly from the front whilst Andy Perry hit the advantage line like a green Volkswagen Transporter and Drew Slater was everywhere. Well done lads!

At the time 2nd grade took to the field was about the same time Beige realised he forgot to order more beer, wine and sausages for the bar. In his defense, he claimed that he was getting into character for “Dress like your old man” day by displaying severe episodes of amnesia. The first time 2′s played Beecroft away we gave them a 22 – 5 lead before switching gears in the final fifteen minutes finishing on top 24 – 22. In similar circumstances, Beecroft started the scoring, followed by two more tries going into the half 17 – 3. A must win game to be a contender for the finals meant the season was on the line but unfortunately the same come back from the first round could not be replicated. Strong efforts from Jimmy Harris, Tom Beverley and Guy Lancaster who provided some great go forward backing up after 3’s.

With the rain holding off all day Coach Big apple was hoping the red and blue would bring the rain as they did against Drummoyne last week. The opening 15 minutes showed some confident signs that Barker were going to go back to back bagging two tries by Abs Sussmann and Thomas “I’m on the Love Train” Pyle. Credit to Beecroft, they stuck their heels in and bridged the gap being down by two at the half. Sadly for the 1’s the second half just went from good to bad to worse with absolutely nothing going right including two yellow cards within four minutes of each other to Sam Figg and Andy Perry leaving us with 13 men. Combined with a head injury to Tubbs, a hamstring issue with Richie and a withdrawal from the Dream Weaver, the boys were out on their feet and the points opened up to the visitors. AJ was dynamic in the lineouts and fantastic job by the two bookends Marty Donaldson and Graysie.

Boys, the wet weather week could not come at a better time. Perfect opportunity to have a break from ruggers and refocus for our final month of footy for 2011. We have a great run with two home games and two local derbies at Lindfield and Knox #1. To all players please put in your best efforts going into the remainder of the season – individual team points are crucial to the Club Champs and it starts with St Pat’s on Saturday 30/07.

See you for touch footy, BBQ and beers on Wednesday from 6.30pm.

Positivity Oozes at Drummoyne Oval

Jul
12
2011

Round 13 presented one of the biggest challenges of the year facing up against the Club Championship front runners Drummoyne at their home ground. Colties got underway against another top four side and showed some gritty defensive to keep Drummoyne at bay. With the possession significantly favouring the home side it was only a matter of time before they landed some points and before the break they managed to bag three. Unfortunately, the Colts who were light on in numbers and missing some key players were unable to bridge the gap. As the game grew on so did Drummoyne’s confidence and momentum finishing 62 – 0. Hard day in the office rooks but credit for sticking in there and giving it everything. Your scrums were particularly dominant and once again thanks to the students from BC that stood up again. Strong performances from Adrian Broger, Sam “Tour of Duty” McKenzie and AJ Gribble.

4th Grade collected a few Colties as they ran through the tunnel but you could tell from the outset this motley crew of 15 were ready to rumble. Drummoyne opened the scoring leading 7 – 0 before Nick “Big Apple” Hensley smashed through a number of players like an all-you-can-eat buffet to find the line and put the ball down under the sticks. At the time, the Big Apple didn’t think too much of the conversion electing to take a drop goal which missed and hit the cross bar. This would come back to haunt 4th Grade as the final result was drawn at 10 – 10. Starting to become a colt hero, Sluggo had the game of his life making a thousand yards all over the park. The entire club was praising him of his efforts after the game except for the 2nd Grade hooker Geoffrey Bollom who was most jealous and threatened by the fellow hooker’s game.

With the sun at its peak it was time for 3rd Grade to take to the field. Sadly, due to absence or injury, the side was missing some of their strike weapons but a massive thanks to all those that backed up from Colts and 4′s. It was a very one sided affair with Drummoyne dominating most areas of the game winning 46 – 0. Strong games from Adrian Broger who backed up from Colts, Dale Mann and Sir Charles Tyler who backed up from 4th Grade. The numbers for Colts to 3rd Grade did once again highlight the issues with our club’s attendance when playing away. With two away games remaining (both local venues at Lindfield and Knox #1) lets really put the effort in so all teams have a fresh side ready to take home the win.

With every game a must win for the sixth placed 2nds, the task did not get any easier playing another top four side in Drummoyne. The first half offered little opportunity in terms of possession for Barker and when there was we failed to take away any points. A few critical injuries during the game did not help the cause but regardless we struggled to find the form we have had in the past few weeks. The loss really puts a lot of pressure on the side for the race to the finals but with three home games from five you still have to believe its possible. Hearty games from Myles Beauchamp, Tim Gray, Buckets Prodigy Taylor and Will Stubbley who played most of the game for the injured Jenko.

There have been some fine accomplishments this season but nothing comes greater than the mighty BOB’s beating the ladder leaders on their turf. 1st Grade came very close to achieving this in the first round going down 26 – 23 and from the outset you could tell they were up to the challenge once more. Thomas Pyle, who has taken to scoring both on and off the field quite well, opened the account within the first 10 minutes. Drummoyne responded after a lot of mounted pressure to stay with the red and blue. The next 20 minutes of the game was a blur as I was called on for the injured Mark Foster – a sweet trade that lost nothing in the buckets department. Once Fozzy was back from the physio, I settled myself on the sideline and put on my warm tangelo sweatpants. The chat at half time was very positive. There was even a air of arrogance from Robbo which was due to either his recent date at the Tree House or the fact that he could sense the massive believe these guys had in leaving with the win. You would be hard pressed to find a more determined, gritty and gutsy 40 minutes of ruggers than what 1st Grade delivered. Protecting a 4 point lead for much of the half, Barker were pressed and peppered on their line, often within inches of it or over it. Even a yellow card to Will Mac leaving them with 14 men did not put a dent in their defence. One ball-and-all tackle whilst roaring in his ear from Marty “Brock Lesnar” Donaldson feared the man with the ball so much he is still experiencing night tremors. In a number of games this season the result has gone against this team but not this time. BOB’s retained the scoreboard at 16 – 12 to take their very first win over the Dirty Reds. Well done lads – massive game from all of you and you each did your job superbly!

Distinguished players of BOB’s, this Saturday is a huge home game against Beecroft as we are fighting for Club Championship points sitting just above them on the ladder. We must put in every effort to get to training on Wednesday and support across all games on Saturday. It is also the Club’s Annual Theme Day at Bob’s Stadium. The theme this year will be Dress Like Your Old Man. So raid your old man’s wardrobe and the most outlandish threads the better. We want to see plenty of corduroy, blazers with the elbow pads, pastel sports jackets, spring time cabana wear, wingtip shoes, shorts with high socks, almost anything made from Terry Towelling and of course suit pants with optical illusion pleats. This is always a great day so make sure you’re not the only one

in your standard get-up – we will take names! Its been a few weeks since Ladies Day so let’s make this a big occasion on Saturday with Cabana Bar to follow.

Iggies Match Report

Jul
04
2011

In terms of results, our day started and finished in very similar circumstances with both Colts and 1st Grade going down narrowly to Iggys 22 – 17. Regardless of the loss, Colts played one of their most spirited games of the season competing with 14 men for the entire 80 minutes. They very nearly caused an upset against the second placed Iggy’s with a late kick and chase from Hugh Doran but sadly it wasn’t to be. BOB’s future looks promising as the side was bolstered with some fresh young talent straight from the old school yard. Very strong game from Scott Goodman at fullback and Michael Fagan again played with all heart in the forwards.

Having only played Iggy’s three weeks ago due to the wet weather, 1st Grade desperately wanted to improve on their narrow win at home. The lads couldn’t get out of first gear in the opening 20 minutes and struggled to match the enthusiasm or their opposition. The end of the first half was positive and represented the team’s capabilities allowing a chance to refocus at half time and step it up a gear in the second 40. Barker did just that in the first opening phases putting a lot of pressure on Iggy’s line. The decision not to take the penalty goal in front went against them with some solid defensive efforts from the home side. There was a good juggling act from TP who found the line which he claims was a direct result of finding love. Carl Robertson brought back the shake and bake  which has not been seen since he got drafted by the Central Coast. Despite these efforts, it seemed 1st Grade could never find their rhythm playing a one try catch up game for the entire 80. Mark “Fruit Bowl” Foster had a very strong game, particularly in defence and Tim Gray and Tom Noval were excellent coming off games in 2nd Grade. An off day fellas but lets turn things around against Drummoyne this week and put in a repeat performance from the first round!

Who has the worst taste in music within the club? If your answer was William Service you would be correct. There is only so much Taylor Swift, S Club 7 and Brooks & Dunn you can listen to. This has nothing to do with how 4th Grade went but I just wanted to register how many devoted readers we have. If you have read this match report please tell me this true fact about Servo at training. 4th Grade were depleted in numbers but thanks to some Colties backing up we were able to launch. There were periods of play that were pretty to watch but overall Iggy’s were superior winning 27 – 7. Charlie Tyler put in 100% like he always does and Jamie Herbert pound for pound is the strongest man in the club with how he attacks the line and tackles guys three times his size. Roxy was belting guys all over the park like he was playing at school boy level again……perhaps fatherhood acts like a fountain of youth?

Back………..the Frat House is back! The Dean was going to close the fraternity down for not bringing home enough bacon and for the lack of toga parties but in a turn of events has applauded the solid performance displayed on Saturday. 3rd Grade started the points tally through the individual efforts of Ryan “There’s Not Enough Plates on My Squat Rack” Godfrey who swatted, not palmed, four defenders like flies to find the try line 25 metres out. Iggy’s did well to stay with the Ivy Leaguer’s and at one stage they grabbed the lead 13 – 12 with only a handful of minutes remaining. Enter the return of the Buckets Prodigy – Chris Taylor who was so determined to find the line on a blindside move he took two guys over with him. As 2′s were warming up behind the dead ball line, Sussmann commented that Cheese would question science if he was to make the extras from the sideline. Flags went up. Count it said the ref. I was unaware that wombats could do that and I’m quite sure Charles Darwin’s only answer would be that some things in life just happen. Frat House wins.

With every game counting for a finals birth, 2nd Grade was always going to be challenged by the second placed Iggy’s on their turf. What’s better than having one Beverley? Some would say one is a enough but two are what dreams are made of. For the first time in history older brother Iain was to cameo at 9 with his younger and much taller brother Tom at 10. We started the first half hungry for field position and ball and it showed with a penalty goal from Jenko in front and a well executed try to the forwards. Iggy’s got their half back on track with a converted try of their own making it 8 – 7. Tom Noval would love to have his time again when he pinched the ball off the line out, ran untouched to the line only to have it raked out during the put down just before the half time break. For every minute of the second half the game was in the balance. Sussmann scored a try and just as impressive was Iain Beverley’s try saving tackle at the other end. Iggy’s had the lead 15 – 13 with only a few minutes remaining. BOB’s were mounting on the pressure until after a number of penalties one was too close to give up and Jenko put her away with the final whistle blowing immediately after. Gutsy win lads and lets keep this momentum going for Drummoyne!

Special acknowledgements to Chris Hickey and AJ Koch for each playing in three games on Saturday. The second game in this double “Road Trip” is Drummoyne who will be more than ready to take us on this Saturday. Let’s put a strong focus in getting there in numbers on Saturday both on and off the field from Colts to 1st Grade. We had more foot traffic on our side of the field against Iggy’s and the same can be done this week if everyone makes the commitment. The club needs to finish off the road trip with some wins on our back before we host two rounds at Turramurra. Training is on Monday and Thursday night this week because of the State of Origin so get involved and let’s make round 13 count!

Mosman Match Report

Jun
28
2011
BOB’s Annual Ladies Day went off without a hitch last Saturday thanks to the collective efforts of the club and some of the ladies who volunteered their time. A prefect winter day was matched with a decorated ladies area, beautiful food, champagne on ice, sponsors, raffles, auctions, a stellar ground and of course two of the North Shore’s finest rugby clubs going head to head. Proceeds and awareness on the day went to the Leukaemia Foundation and the club is very proud to announce that close to $5,000 was raised. Thank you to everyone who contributed to the success of the day and to all of the spectators for getting involved and supporting both the club and the worthy cause!

Now onto the footy. After a win on the bell in the first round against Mosman, Colties were optimistic that a similar if not better performance could be put in at home. Unfortunately for the young guns of the club it was one of those days you would rather forget. Ill discipline was the compounding issue with a staggering number of penalties against the red and blue. Three forwards that stood up well were Todd Jeffrey, Mike Fagan and Sean Kelly, especially with the absence of Sam Figg who was promoted to 1st Grade & Sam McKenzie who has become a professional gamer. The final whistle probably could not come soon enough with a compelling win to Mosman 46 – 5. Each of you knows that you are capable of much more than this. You will get your chance on Saturday to prove this against the second placed Iggy’s.

A tough day in the office was followed by another at the hands of 4th Grade. With a sweet blend of old heads and some rookies backing up, 4′s had a task ahead of them against second placed Mosman. Mosman quickly proved why they are a top two side cutting through for some easy tries with Barker lacking defensively. The Captain and recent father-to-be, Paul Roxannas tried to spur on his troops and even a conversion that hit both uprights and went over wasn’t enough going down six tries to two. Strong games from Charlie Tyler, Pluss, Arus and good to see Redders getting some good shots on!

A solid line up for 3rd Grade held high hopes for the early afternoon fixture. Up against another top four side, The Frat House took it to Mosman for the entire 30 minutes of each half with only a penalty goal going against them on the bell being the only difference. Solid effort lads and hard luck not bringing home the bacon. Stand out games went to Hugh Doran who backed up from Colts, Benny Reid and Jimmy Harris. Games like Saturday proves how close you guys are in the competition. A few of the close games have gone against you but keep pushing and the results will come.

With the crowd beginning to swell 2nd Grade took to the field with only one thing in mind and it wasn’t the delicious pink cupcakes in the ladies area. The team has the belief that they can make the finals and now at Round 11 every game counts. With this in mind, the opening 15 minutes really didn’t reflect our intentions coughing up two easy five pointers. We fought back before the half with a try in the corner to Tom Beverley (maybe his first?) decreasing Mosman’s lead to 13 – 8. Again, the second half didn’t start how we would have liked conceding an early converted try in the first five minutes. This team must love living on a knifes edge as we brought ourselves back to be down 21 – 20 offering Mosman a penalty kick to put them four ahead. After mounting pressure on Mosman with countless sets and penalties the forwards found the line at long last with the kick unsuccessful winning 26 – 23. Gritty effort lads and good to know we can hold in for these games. Liam “Pear Salad” Flanagan had his best game of the season with Beige and Danny Matthews also contributing well.

By 3.15pm the BOB Dome was at capacity. Enter Chris “300 Games” Gray. Greeted by a tunnel and pyrotechnics that would not look out of place at one of Houndy’s Birthday gigs, Graysie took to the field for his 300th time and 14th consecutive season in the red and blue. The team followed in their limited edition white jerseys for the Leukaemia Foundation before a minute silence. With a number of key players missing in the away game at Mosman, Barker wanted to even the score with their full compliment at home. In the opening half, both teams were very evenly matched trading blow for blow in terms of tries and penalty goals. The crowd was being treated to a very good standard of rugby and you could tell our boys were right in the mix to take the Whalers to the wire. In the second half, Barker extended their lead to 12 leading 25 – 13 and gaining all of the confidence to go on with it. At this stage in the game with just over 15 minutes remaining you would be betting your chips on red but full credit to Mosman – they didn’t back down bridging the gap with two quick tries of their own and then two more to seal the game 39 – 25. A hard way to go down fellas but many positives to take into the remaining games. Richie Holden, Will Macaulay and Hank Scorpio all had strong games and Hebblewhite had a great Captain’s knock taking out three points.

Gents, with Round 11 dusted, its about this time that a lot of clubs fall into a bit of a mid-season slump. Its crucial that we do not do the same. We need to breakdown the remaining seven games into sections to make both our team and club goals more manageable. Our first section is called “Road Trip”. Our sights need to be set firmly on the next two away matches against Iggy’s followed by Drummoyne. This will be a challenge being on the road for two weeks and that is why it is imperative our numbers are represented strongly at training and on both game days. This week, Iggy’s presents a great opportunity for us to square them up on points if we want it. 241 points is all that separates us and this can be made up if every player is willing. Let’s rise to the occasion on this road trip lads and gather some momentum into the final quarter of the season!

Colleagues Match Report

Jun
21
2011
The start of the second half of the season took us over the bridge to Rose Bay against one of the heavyweights in Colleagues. For anyone coming straight from the Sheaf in Double Bay the night before, well played. In Round 1, the Barker were towelled up in all grades and colts with an official welcome to 1st division. The club was down on troops that day my friends but the club agreed that the same would not to be repeated.

Colts started very slowly in the first half with not much going right for the novocastrians against the wind. With a must win against a lower ranked Colleagues required to stay in the race, the lads rallied in the second half to put on three tries and clinching the game 17 – 10. Congrats on the win but more importantly well done on turning the tide in the second half. Particularly strong games from Macca who was everywhere on the park, Hugh Doran for his potency from the back and Will Stubbly for good attack and even better defence.

With the 4th Grade game deferred, the task of continuing the winning formula came down to 3rd Grade who were up against the second placed Colleagues. In the eyes of any player or supporter of Barker, you would think we had stacked the Frat House with plenty of skilled players named to the side. Full credit to Colleagues, they fought relentlessly to win strongly 22 – 0. Clinton Harwood proves week in week out that he’s still got it even when a Colleagues player tried to re-enact a scene from Face Off in the second half. Tommy Norval was also strong and Ben Reid had his best performance of the season.

The baton was then passed onto 2nd Grade where the challenge of taking down the top team was on everyone’s mind. From the opening 10 minutes you could tell we had the upper hand with plenty of pressure being applied to the Colleagues goal line. Despite the efforts, the home team went into the half up 15 – 8 but gathering by the words that were spilt during the break it only fuelled our cause. If there was any doubt, the next 35 minutes showed what this team is capable of. A well executed try to Abs Sussmann and another five pointer through some strong tackle breaks by Dicko put us in front 20 – 15 with only minutes to go. Rugby can be a cruel game and this was most evident when Colleagues were awarded a try on the bell even though there was speculation with the put down. The game ended in a draw but heads up boys – top four is ours if we want it. We wanted it more than our opposition last Saturday and if we go into each game with this mentality we will achieve our goal. Strong games also from Danny Matthews, Tom Beverley and Guy Lancaster who is in career best form.

Coming off three from four wins, 1st Grade are starting to find their feet and gain confidence in a very competitive Kentwell Cup. Beating 3rd placed Colleagues at home was going to be a monumental task but there was a strong believe in the team going into the round. The first 20 minutes of the first half was a pure grind with each team testing the other and questioning where the points were going to be conceded. Barker’s line was broken first and this was followed by two more relatively soft tries before going into the half. Even though Colleagues had the points on the board, Hensley and the boys didn’t loose sight of the big picture and desperately wanted to turn the tide in the next 40. Unfortunately, similar words were no doubt expressed in the opposition’s huddle and they came out firing from all cylinders. A head knock to Hank Scorpio meant a shuffle of Dream Weaver to 10 and Danny Matthews to 9 who both delivered with no warning. Praise should be given to Colleagues - particularly their forwards. Their recycle of ball and their size up front proved too strong on the day with several tries executed well throughout the second half winning 52 – 3. It was surprising to see the final score as the points differential didn’t necessarily match the tough performance and match up on the day.
As Club Captain I would like to highlight that last Saturday’s overall achievement was a vast improvement from Round 1 with a win and a draw from four games. The club, however, is still struggling to match our away game efforts with the holistic approach we take to home games. Our committee members and coaches work very hard to get teams prepared for each Saturday – we simply need to turn up and have fun playing footy. For the next away game on 2/07 against Iggy’s at Ryde Oval let’s address this issue and outnumber our opposition on the sidelines across the whole day!

I hope everyone is ready for the biggest home game of the season against Mosman this Saturday -  it’s Ladies Day! The committee has worked very hard to organise a huge day for the club and our supporters (particularly the ladies) with proceeds and awareness going towards the Leukaemia Foundation. Let’s rally as many people as possible to get down to Turramurra Oval for Colts at 10.45am right through to 1st Grade at 3.15pm and make this a day to remember!

Graysie (as in Chris) will be featuring in his 300th game for the club which is a huge achievement and one that is rarely reached so let’s make sure we are all there to help celebrate this milestone. Boys, massive opportunity to take the win in all grades and colts this weekend. Let’s continue our ascent in each cup and bring home as many points as possible for Club Champs. Get to Turramurra on Wednesday and lets train the house down to prepare for Saturday. Saturday is our day off the field – lets make sure we represent the same on the field!

Knox Match Report

Jun
07
2011
A mere 5 points held us back from sweeping in all grades and colts last Saturday against our old rivals Knox. BOB’s had a disjointed preparation with Monday training cancelled and Wednesday training moved to the school due to the weather. Regardless, you could tell immediately when arriving at the ground that the club was ready to draw blood.

From the opening whistle, Colties were there not only in numbers but also eagerness to set the platform for the day. With Knox sitting in the top 4, Barker had a point to prove and prove it they did with a very dominant display. Barker went out to an early 12 – 0 lead in the first half but credit to Knox who fought back to square the ledger by halftime. After the break and some inspiring words from Coach Skinner and Curlewis, the boys stepped it up a notch. It must have been the phrase from Jack “We should be opening these guys up like a can” that created the extra motivation. A can most definitely was opened up landing two tries before full time providing a bonus point win 25 -12. One of these tries was off a brilliant individual effort from fullback Hugh Doran. Other strong performances also included Michael Fagan, Will Stubbly and the very quite spoken Figgy. Congratulations on a great win gents but the close of the first round will be tested against 3rd place Iggy’s this week so let’s bring a carbon copy of this performance on Saturday!

4th Grade has been the hibernating bear this season. Where does 4th Grade disappear to for away games and then come out of the woodwork for home games? True to form at home, numbers for 4th Grade were bursting, however, an early try to the President of Knox put them on the back foot early. Back in the #10 jersey, Nick “The Big Apple” Hensley worked well with a returning Tom Norval at #12 who looked like he’d overslept in a tanning bed. An individual try from Cam Wakeham with over half a dozen tackle breaks to find the line put us to the front at 10 – 7 where we stayed until the close of the game. I employ all 4th Grade players to make this a week to week commitment and not simply for home games.

With two wins on our backs it was time for the Frat House to replicate some magic. 3rd Grade was up against another top four side in Knox and after 60 minutes of play the only difference between the two sides was a conversion going down 7 – 5. Well done to President Cheese for bounce passing it over the line for a try on his 29th Birthday. Afterwards, we locked him in the dumpster but he got out. Welcome home also to Will Service who has been taming wild bulls in Canada and AJ Koch who has been doing a whole lot of nothing on the beaches of Mexico. There is a rumour that you have concealed some rare birds from the Baja Peninsula in Mexico in that nest you call hair so you may expect a call from customs.

So close yet so far. A 22 – 21 loss in 2nd Grade was a heartbreaking one but one we can certainly learn from. The early lead of 9 – 0 from three consecutive penalty goals was the result of some good pressure and smart footy in the opening 15 minutes but a lapse in concentration and taking our foot off the pedal handed some easy tries to Knox going into the half behind 17 – 9. We started the second half strongly as we have for most games this season. Two unanswered tries came from some great team work by the forwards – one play consisted of over 12 phases resulting in the Captain Geoff Bollom getting his first for the season. In the dying minutes, Knox pulled out a late try in the corner that started from halfway and snatched victory. Remember this feeling lads. Switching off, even for a split second can cost you. There are only 12 points separating 1st place to 6th place in the Burke Cup and having played all clubs accept for Iggy’s we know we are a massive chance of taking up a top four spot.

They say the best is saved for last and by 4.45pm on Saturday the quality of rugby put on by Barker 1′s would be their finest of the season. Both teams were desperate for a win and fuelled by the traditional rivalry meant this was going to be an epic showdown. Neither side disappointed the crowd with a seesaw battle in the first half with each side challenging the others defensive efforts. It’s unknown what was said by The Big Apple at halftime but it certainly took affect. BOB’s started the second half in a blistering fashion and once the lead was extended, they never looked back finishing with a commanding and thoroughly deserving win 38 – 20. Congratulations to all players and it is exciting to know how well you guys can play –  Tom Pyle for scoring a hat trick, Marty Donaldson for putting on your best performance of the year, amazing work rates from Mufumo and Hebblewhite, strong leadership and service from the Dream Weaver and countless advantage line breaks from Richie and Fozzy. Take this intensity to Iggy’s on Saturday and let’s finish off round one on top with plenty to work with in the second round.

BOB’s First Annual Bowlarama n Beers Night was a huge success in terms of the quality banter between 35 men dressed in spring time cabana wear and button downs straight off the set of “The Big Lebowski” – its a shame the same quality can’t be said about the bowling! Highest score went to Robbo on 163, lowest score went to Saxon on 73, most awkward technique goes to Guy Lancaster, most limp wristed style went to Nick Peterson, classic closet bowler was Liam Flanagan, fastest bowler went to Sussmann, most gutter balls was achieved by Ryan Godfrey and fastest person to quit bowling altogether was G White.
Lads, massive confidence boost from last Saturday! It shows what we are capable of when our attitude is right and we support each other as a club. The same must be delivered to home game #5 against Iggy’s this weekend. Massive points on offer both for individual teams and for the club – we must stand up to give ourselves the best opportunity to bring home wins. Let’s have a good preparation on Wednesday night and finish round one and halfway through the season with plenty of positives. Knox thought they would get their broom out and sweep us last weekend - we almost swept them! Put everything in this weekend and we could find ourselves doing the spring cleaning!

Match Report v Campbeltown

May
31
2011
The annual bus trip south to Campbelltown has left some sweet and sour memories for each of us to reflect on. Around 30 brave souls took to the bus on a sunny but fresh morning with what ever breakfast treats St Leonards Forum could muster up. Carl Robertson went to town on a pizza that looked like it was prepared blindfolded in a processed meat packing plant and Danny Matthews, not known for his culinary delights, threw down an outdated egg and chicken sandwich which my old man’s dog would shy away from. Regardless, the boys were ready for the trip, the trusty “Voyager” was loaded up and the old oyster farmer was back for another stint behind the wheel.

Colties, as they have been known to do, took the field first against a side that challenged them early with their size advantage and physicality. Both teams went into the game fairly even sharing the middle of the ladder but Campbelltown proved to be far too strong winning 41 -0. Phil Bedwell had one of his best games carving up outside and raising a few eyebrows from the grade players. Other standouts were Figgy with a very physical performance and Ed Learmonth leading from the front. An honourable mention goes to Billy Dent who threw himself at everything often resembling a pinball. Refocus for Knox gents – we must take these guys down and get our season back on track!

The lack of numbers was a serious contributor on Saturday when it came to fielding a 4th Grade side and this was obvious with the number of players that put their hand up to make sure 15 were on the paddock. Particular thanks to the willingness of some of the Colties such as AJ, Doran, Oogie, Webby, Pluss, Fagan and Bedwell to name a few. Probably no surprises to see the final scoreboard 52 – 0 with so many players backing up to a fresh team ready to take charge.

3rd Grade had one of the toughest assignments of the day taking on the ladder leaders. This team is deserving of their top spot but I would argue that all 15 players from the Frat House came to play. Simply far too many missed tackles and the lack of in your face defence cost 3′s large going down 50 – 15. I will give credit to the final 15 minutes. We kept them scoreless and put on three tries but it begs the question why does it take 45 minutes to get these results? Strong game from Will Macaulay and Jonde “Jerry Curls” Donte. Special shout out to Hilly who has busted his right hand and is expected to be sidelined for the rest of the season.

Besides the bakery treats in the morning, this is when the sour memories start to turn sweet! 2nd Grade had a game plan and they stuck to their guns for the entire 70 minutes. Both halves, Campbelltown started with purpose but we weathered the storm and when ball was in hand we lit up the park from one side to other as well as up the middle. The curtains were drawn with Barker winning 27 – 17. Forwards take your hats off – you guys simply wanted it more. Guy Lancaster, you had one of your best games. Strong performances also from James Arnott, Jimmy Harris, Drew Slater and Danny Matthews. There is a galvanised team working here and if we continue to play for each other the way we have I can definitely see us contesting top 4.

Coming off their first win the week before, 1st Grade were keen to go back to back against the second placed Harlequins. Barker started each 40 well leading the point scoring with a individual try to Pyza and a well executed try finished by Robbo in the corner. Even though the final score suggests otherwise, it was a seesaw battle where the visiting team had their opportunities but found it tough to bridge the gap. Very strong games from Marty up front as well as Jimmy Mufumo and Shalky causing issues to the oppositions attack and ball retention. Similar to Colties, regroup and set your sights on Knox this week – this is a must win and all important towards this season’s campaign. Another shout out goes to Riggers who I hope is recovering well. When I asked to see your knee on the physio bed I thought the worst until you told me that wasn’t the swollen knee. Looks like we’re going to have to put that “Shoot the Boot” contract on ice even though she was far from being watertight.

With Judge Gray presiding, the accusations and punishments were dealt swiftly but fairly on the bus tour back to the C Lounge – well done to all those who took part! Weather is hindering our ability to train this week so make sure you get in your own sessions at the gym to prepare for Knox. The old rivalry has lost nothing over the years and Saturday will be no different. Get there in numbers, play your hearts out for your team and lets rip into these guys and put some wins on the scoresheets!

Match Report v St Patricks

May
17
2011
Three words sum up our weekend campaign against St Pats at Strathfield – “WAKE UP CALL”. Across the day, we were out numbered, out enthused and over powered. As a club will simply didn’t rally with the same numbers as we did at the double header a week ago and it clearly showed on the scoreboard.

The day started particularly poorly with only half the players required for the 4th Grade kick off. Fortunately to those that did turn up, there were seven or eight willing Colleagues players that backed up from their 5th Grade game to field a full side albeit that the game had been forfeited. Some invitations were handed out to the boys from Woollahra to play for Bobbies as some of them proved very handy.

3rd Grade were in a grind against a forward dominated side which proved too strong winning 17 – 5. For the bulk of both halves, our boys defended a lot more than they would have liked only getting a few opportunities to fight back in attack. When the ball was in hand, especially when it was spread wide, their bigger pack did struggle to get around the park so more of that for the next time. The major win from the red and blue corner was forcing a very reluctant and heavy set linesmen from St Pats to go to the other side of the ground at half time - he was not pleased.

With the schedule altered by St Pats, we had our colties playing at midday and posting up against the ladder leaders. From the opening 10 minutes we held good field advantage and struck first on the scoreboard with a penalty goal. Disappointingly, the points dried up from here on in with St Pats proving why they are leading the race piling on 59 unanswered points. Put this one behind you rooks but most importantly learn from it. Massive opportunity to turn it around this week against Lindfield and get back into the top ranks!

Without being biased, the 2nd Grade game was the game of the round. Regardless of the shuffling of players in the lead up, you could tell from the opening 10 minutes we were very much up to the task of taking down the front runners. This one came down to the wire with St Pats very relieved to get the win 22 – 18. Each week, we are getting more confident and enthusiastic at every break of the game and this worried the hell out of St Pats. Standout performances in particular came from Danny Matthews & Jimmy Harris. Again, take this same resurgence to Lindfield on Saturday and let’s get tropical!

Hard day in the office for 1st Grade. Defensively, we could not match the clinical display delivered by St Pats wave after wave. St Pats simply played out of their skins putting on a comprehensive win 44 - 13. Hensley has addressed the issues pending from this game which can easily be corrected and improved upon for the remainder of the season. Muscle up boys this Saturday for the clash of the North Shore and get that first win you deserve!

Gents, more commitment is the overriding message from this report. More commitment to training, more commitment to your team and more commitment to your club. St Pats have been in 1st Division since 1974 and if we think we can rock up as we did last week and get results then you are sadly mistaken. We must commit all of our resources to each and every week and it starts this Saturday against Lindfield. Let’s remind these guys our much we loved towelling them up in 2nd Div!

Double Header Match Report

May
10
2011

Due to Mother Nature, the mighty Bob’s had to deploy into a double header last weekend – away to Beecroft on Saturday and at home to Drummoyne on Sunday. Overall, the weekend delivered some very encouraging results and the writing on the wall indicates that we are starting to make our mark in Division 1.

Colts: The rookies lead the way against Beecroft as they did against Mosman putting on a very comprehensive win 26-12. If any team was going to back up the following day the best it was going to be the novocastrians. Drummoyne, however, proved why they are competing for top spot withholding Barker 34 – 17. Special shout out to Junior Slater – I hope you are recovering well with the split eyelid – it was nice present for Mother’s Day! Boys, congrats on breaking into the top 4 – let’s get ready to shake down the ladder leaders St Patrick’s this Saturday!4th Grade: What can you say about the 7 – 5 loss to Beecroft? You guys were the better team on the day and probably should have put on four or five tries. The old heads from Drummoyne tested a side that was literally strung together on Sunday morning – disappointing result but thanks to all those that backed up, particularly some of the colts.

3rd Grade: Is the Frat Pack back? If the Fraternity could have the last 10 minutes of their game back against Drummoyne then they could have taken two wins from the weekend. Without taking anything away, you guys set the bar on Saturday for where we need to be defensively. You guys smashed Beecroft all over the park winning 22 – 0 and narrowly went down to Drummoyne after commanding most of the game 17 -13. The Frat Pack is getting back and more of the same from the weekend will ensure you guys continue your assent on the table.

2nd Grade: “Come back. Come back”. These were the words that Rose faintly shouted to get the attention of a rescue boat after Titanic sunk and Jack drowned to the bottom of the Atlantic. True story. Where’s the relevance you say? At half time against Beecroft down 22 – 5 there was no relevance. Fast forward 25 minutes and you would still question the relevance. The relevance kicks in during the final 10 minutes when 2nd Grade scored 3 unanswered tries beating Beecroft 24 – 22. Come back. The biggest come back this season but a similar come back was not to continue the following day in a tough battle with the Dirty Reds.

1st Grade: It actually hurts to write that 1st Grade were unable to take home the points on both days. Each match was not without the lack of effort. Against Beecroft, we showed obvious signs of dominance, particularly in the first half. It must have been the Ladies Day that Beecroft was hosting that gave them the added inspiration to play a competitive second half taking the game 26 – 20.
An upset against the 2010 Kentwell Cup winners was almost a reality narrowing going down 26 – 23. There wasn’t a player that left the field against Drummoyne that didn’t leave everything out there. You all deserved the standing ovation you received. If the same intensity and heart is reproduced each week there will be further promotion in the Kentwell Cup from the blue and reds!

Service to say, this weekend is a big one against St Pat’s! We are out of our four week hiatus and back to playing regular weekly footy. We need to prepare well tonight to give ourselves every opportunity to continue each team’s assertion on the ladder. The dozen or so players we were missing from Sunday will be back in the ranks so let’s bring the rain!

Vale Chris Bolt

May

2011

Barker Old Boys Rugby Union Football Club has been deeply saddened by the sudden passing of Chris Bolt.

Chris was a very enthusiastic and valued member of BOBs. Chris left barker College in 1979 and made his mark on the Club both on and off the paddock. He served on the Committee throughout the 1980s – 1990s including that of Club President.

For the many former team mates, and all those who knew him well, we’ll remember him as a terrific man, enthusiastic Social Club Chairman and a rugby player who consumed endless roles of electrical tape each game day. He will be greatly missed.

Our thoughts are with his wife Steph, brothers Simon and Jeff, children and family at this sad time.

Round 2 Match Report – Mosman (Away)

Apr
11
2011

Round 2 had us travelling away to Rawson Park to play the always competitive Mosman Whalers. 4th Grade led the charge and opened the game well scoring first, however, Mosman proved to be a tough opponent winning 36 – 7. A huge thanks to Brushy’s Army mates for filling in on the day and hopefully we can see more of you throughout the season.

Our Colties played on a separate ground which coincided with 3rd Grade. Colt’s had another tough assignment but managed to grind out a win 26 – 19 with stand out performances from Hugh Doran, Nick Pluss, Ben Slatter and Sam Figg. Well done to all the lads and hopefully this success can continue against St Ignatians this week!

3rd Grade or “The Fraternity’s New House of Pledges” tried hard to channel this youthful colt energy but were unable to bring home the “W” going down 28 -10. Due to injuries, 2nd Grade, similar to 3rd Grade, had a lot of changes which brought in the Man Mountain from Maroubra – Luke Ingold to the front row and Hilly donning the number 12 jersey for the first time. The score line probably didn’t reflect the tight tussle the two sides had but Mosman certainly had the wood winning 35 – 5. If 2nd’s can play as they did in the second half for the entire 70 minutes our first win should not be far away.
Ask anyone in 1st Grade and they will tell you that they would love to get the last 15 minutes of their game back. With 15 minutes to go and trailing by 7 Bob’s had the momentum with a penalty in Mosman’s red zone and a try brewing. Unfortunately, a penalty went against the lads and they never returned to this end of the park with Mosman capitalising on some weakened defence piling on 20 points. Finding your feet at this high standard of rugby can take a little time but I don’t think you guys are far off from making your mark.

Fellow Bob’s, please make sure you make training on Wednesday so we can go through our paces and be ready for the weekend. The commitment put in at training will pay dividends come game day! Saturday is at home at the Bob Dome against Iggies and it will deliver a great contest of old boy ruggers! Get as many people down to Turramurra Oval to help support the club and let’s go into the Easter break with some wins on our backs!
